A splitter is passive - it shares the incoming signal equally between its outputs, and each output is lower by the insertion loss. With eight ways that loss is significant, so an 1x8 splitter is normally fed from an amplifier or a strong headend, not straight off a bare aerial. The wide 5-2400 MHz passband means the same unit works for digital terrestrial TV and for satellite IF from an LNB. One port passes DC so an amplifier or LNB can be powered back down the coax.
